Equipment

All IKK members are expected to wear a kendo uniform (hakama and keikogi) or work out clothes to practice. Each student is responsible for purchasing a shinai (flexible bamboo sword, approx $25 each). Additional equipment to consider is the bokutoh (wooden sword), a bag to transport your swords to class, and bogu (protective armor). The club has a limited number of bogu sets to loan to students.

Keikogi
Keikogi The kiekogi is the shirt portion of the uniform.
Hakama
A hakama is the lower portion of a Kendo uniform. The kendo uniform is made up of two pieces, the kiekogi (shirt) and hakama (pants).
A hakama contains seven deep pleats, 2 on the back and 5 on the front. The seven pleats relate to the virtues of bushido.
Shinai
A typical bamboo shinai A shiani is usually sword sword made up of 4 individual bamboo slots fitted together. Carbon-graphite shianis also exist that require less upkeep, but are more expensive.
Bokken
A wooden bokken. A bokken is a wooden sword that is used to replicate a katana, or other type of bladed weapon. Bokken are used to perform kata in both Kendo and Iaido.
Bogu
A bogu is a 5 piece set of armor used in Kendo A bogu is a 5 piece set of armor used in Kendo. Bogu is the collective name of the five pieces of armor used in Kendo; men (head), do (chest), kote (hands), and tara (waist/groin).
