Wednesday, December 23rd, 2009STAR WARS: The Old Republic
Sunday, July 19th, 2009I get more excited the more I read and see about this upcoming game. They, of course, don’t have any of the big an exciting information yet; such as all the classes, races, etc, but just the couple of game play videos I’ve seen have me hoping this will be as fun as WoW has been. I’m sure I’ll start out playing a Jedi on the Republic side of things, but could probably be persuaded to try out a red saber

Mining for goods!
Thursday, July 16th, 2009This is a cool video on a presentation at TED on a new medical device for retrieving bone marrow from donors. The current way of harvesting bone marrow is pretty painful and brutal. This new device is pretty interesting and quite ingenious.
Color Photography from 1909.
Thursday, June 18th, 2009
Russian photographer Sergey Mikhaylovich Prokudin-Gorsky created incredible color photographs of various Russian locations as part of an ambitious mission to photograph the Russian Empire. It was interesting reading about how he had to create each picture since it was a combination of multiple exposures and the people photographed would have to hold still for up to a minute to finish the process.

New Hybrid vehicle mod from INL
Tuesday, June 9th, 2009KTVB is reporting (through the AP) that the Maui Mayor is testing a new hybrid vehicle modification from the Idaho National Laboratory (INL). Supposedly the car is a modified Toyota Prius that includes an extra battery that can be recharged from a standard electrical outlet. The story reports that the mayor reported getting around 1,175 miles on $87, $47 for gas and $40 for electricity.
Now I’m all for being green and trying to do some part to limit mankind’s impact on the environment, but my Nissan Altima gets about the same mileage for around the same cost. So not only are you not saving any money by doing this you are also really just shifting the burden of fuel from one limited source to another. Depending on the source electricity is no better of a solution than gas. If the electricity is created from a coal power plant for example then are you really making any progress? Arguably some sources of electricity are better than others, but the problem still remains.
I think more time and resources need to be spent into looking at completely alternative resources and improving effieciency. Hydrogen would be a good example, but even then you have to pay attention to the environmental costs of actually manufacturing the parts of a hydrogen car. Automotive plants don’t exactly run on Mr. Fusion.
How to be a Skeptic.
Tuesday, June 9th, 2009I provided this video to Chaotek a while ago back, but I thought I’d throw it up on here as well just for a reminder and credit for finding it

Yar! There be Pirates!
Monday, June 8th, 2009
Well it appears Sweden’s Pirate Party has captures itself a seat on the European Parliament. The Pirate Party now owns 1/18th of the Swedish seats and 1/785th of the total European seats on the Parliament. I guess this kind of shows that democracy can work in some aspects if people can get together and agree on something.
While I think the Pirate Party has some decent ideas their agenda is far too small to actually be a political party. They need to shore up on some more relevant issues than just copyright, patents and privacy to be a more viable political entity.
